To help explore the culture, history and politics that are interwoven into the complex and diverse backdrop of this course, students were asked to secure 5 online resources to share virtually with peers and partners.  The resources should fall into different categories to include history, demographics, commerce, travel, education, culture, politics, general business tips, traps to avoid. Below are some of those links.

Topic: Expatriate Information

Title: Expatriate Life

This is a website has links to various aspects of an expatriate’s life in China. It is a website that can be used to find employment and volunteering opportunities abroad. It has advice and resources to those who want to work internationally. It also contains information on living, working, studying and traveling in China. It provides links to business and economy, education and studying abroad, information on the embassies and consulates in China, and the role of government and international organizations for China

Topic: History

Title: Chinese History

The site provides information on China’s history by looking at different historical periods, Chinese dynasties, and other points of interest. The information on the Great Wall was of particular interest. There are several links to related topics.

Title: Differences in Cultures

Dr. Geert Hofstede has dedicated his life to research and teaching at universities around the world concentrating on International Management and Organizational Anthropology. His research led to a classification of culture known worldwide as Hofstede’s Five Dimensions of National Culture - Power Distance, Individualism, Masculinity, Uncertainty Avoidance, and Long-Term Orientation. The link above directs users to a wealth of knowledge on the differences in cultures among countries. For the purpose of this class, you can compare the United States and China.

Title: Traditional Chinese Medicine

This is an interesting website about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) It is a simple easy to read resource guide that examines age-old Chinese views and traditional cures using herbs, the five element theory, eight guiding principles. It is called the Alternative and Contemporary Medicine Resource Guide. It is interesting to read and fun to think about.

Title: National Geographic


This is National Geographic’s China website. Here you will find delightful photo galleries, historical facts, music information and a wonderful satellite map section that lets you drill down to small towns and villages. The site is nicely put together and inspiring.

Title: Religions in China

Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism are the three major religions in China; although it is true to say that Confucianism is a school of philosophy rather than a religion.

Title: Communist Party

This website is the website of the Chinese Communist Party. The party leaders and their activities are one of the major features of the website. It also has a lot of historical information on the Communist Party from its foundation to its present. There is also a theory and opinion section which has different viewpoints from members of the party. The link between the communist party and business in China is strong so this website may be useful to better understand that relationship.

Title: USCC

The United States of America-China Chamber of Commerce (USCCC) http://www.usccc.org/ is a not-for-profit, bi-national membership organization dedicated to developing increased U.S.-China trade and investment activities by assisting American and Chinese companies, professionals and the general public to better understand the business environments and cultural traditions relevant to successfully doing business in both countries.

Title: Business Etiquette

Being able to blend into the culture you are visiting is essential for doing business overseas. This website gives etiquette types when visiting and doing business in China.

Topic: Chinese Newspaper

Title: Chinese Today

This is another online publication for general China information.
It includes culture, tourism, political, and military information.


Topic: Chinese Manufactoring
Title: Global Manufacturing the China Challenge

This link is to another well written and very interesting white paper by Jim Pinto. The article is titled Global Manufacturing the China Challenge This article is a must read for anybody interested or concerned about the future of manufacturing specifically in China. Again, extremely thought provoking insight and analysis.
