CS1030 -- Software Design II

Spring 2005

This course continues the study of software development using an object-oriented approach. Students use their knowledge of Java to rapidly build competence with the C++ programming language. C++ coverage includes topics such as pointers, dynamic memory management, and a comparison between the Java and C++ programming languages. (prereq: CS-1020) (2-2-3)

Course Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, the student will:

Understand and be able to apply C++ functions.
Be able to use existing C++ libraries.
Understand and be able to apply the Standard Template Library (STL) vector and list classes.
Understand and be able to manage memory dynamically via pointers and references.
Understand composition, inheritance, and polymorphism.
Be able to design and implement simple C++ classes and class libraries.
Be familiar with differences between the C++ and Java programming languages.

Officially: None. However, you may want to download an electronic copy of Thinking in C++, 2^nd edition, Volume 1 by Bruce Eckel and Thinking in C++, Volume 2: Practical Programming by Bruce Eckel and Chuck Allison.

Homework

Homework will be given nearly every week. Students are encouraged to work in groups of two to three. One submission should be submitted for each group (clearly identifying all of the students in the group). All students must understand all of the solutions submitted, and I may choose to quiz students individual to ensure this is the case.
