SE0010 -- Introduction to Software Development

This course provides an introduction to object-oriented software development using the Java programming language. Emphasis is placed on translating written problem descriptions into robust software solutions. Topics covered include Java program structure, algorithmic problem solving and modularization, I/O statements, control constructs, looping techniques, and class libraries. (prereq: none) (1-2-2)

Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, the student will:

  • Design and document an algorithmic solution for a given problem statement
  • Use if/if-else/switch statements to control program flow in algorithmic solutions
  • Select the appropriate selection control statement for a given task
  • Create and interpret complex expressions that use relational and boolean operators
  • Use while/do-while/for statements to control repetition in algorithmic solutions
  • Select the appropriate repetition control statement for a given task
  • Translate UML class diagrams into Java code
  • Use existing Java class libraries
  • Design and implement simple Java programs
  • Test and debug code

Attendance

Attendance for this course is mandatory. There are a total of ten meeting times for this course. You course grade will be reduced by one percentage point for each meeting time that you miss.

Quizzes

Quizzes will be given nearly every week at the beginning of lab. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. No make-up quizzes will be given.

Lecture Notes

Each student must take notes (on paper) during each lecture. The notes for each lecture will be evaluated by the instructor during the lab session and a letter grade will be given for each week.

Laboratory

Unless stated otherwise, all laboratory assignments will be completed individually. All lab assignments are worth 100 points per week (i.e., a two week lab assignment is worth 200 points).
