GATS - October 1998

The Great American Train Show was held in Portland, Oregon in October of 1998 at the Portland Metropolitan Exposition Center. Here are some pictures of some of the layouts at the show.

Longview, Kelso & Rainier Model Railroad Club

The Chicago & North Western dominates the Longview, Kelso & Rainier Model Railroad Club's HO-scale layout, as this view of the town's industrial park shows C&NW freight trains on both the main line and branch line, and a C&NW switcher in the industrial park.

A Mountain Pine Lumber switcher is at work switching a Seattle & North Coast box car at the sawmill on the logging line on the Longview, Kelso & Rainier Model Railroad Club's HO-scale layout.

A pair of Chicago & North Western SD40-2s passes by the engine terminal, which is dominated by C&NW power including another SD40-2, a U30C, a Dash 9-44CW, an Alco FA and and A-B set of F7s. Non-C&NW power includes a Union Pacific U23B, GP40 & SW1500 and an Amtrak Genesis unit. The LK&R Jordan Spreader #100 is also present.

Later, as in real life, the Chicago & North Western power gave way to Union Pacific power, including a DDA40X Centennial, two DD40s and a DD35B, a U30C, SD40-2, U23B & a GP40 with Missouri Pacific lettering. A pair of EMD GP60 demonstrators is also present.

A pair of Union Pacific GP50s pull a freight train on the branch line past the sawmill on the Longview, Kelso & Rainier Model Railroad Club's HO-scale layout.

BC Rail RDC cars ply the main line and a pair of Union Pacific GP50s pull a freight train on the branch line while a Southern Pacific NW2 handles the industrial park on the Longview, Kelso & Rainier Model Railroad Club's HO-scale layout.

A pair of Union Pacific GP50s pull a freight train on the branch line along the cliffs under the logging camp on the Longview, Kelso & Rainier Model Railroad Club's HO-scale layout.

Beaverton Modular Railroad Club

The harbor with the boats floating in real water is a longtime staple of the Beaverton Modular Railroad Club's HO-scale layout.

Here is a closer look at the boats and the lighthouse on the Beaverton Modular Railroad Club's HO-scale layout.

The two crews painting this bridge seem to have had a little trouble coordinating with each other. I'm not sure whose HO-scale layout this was a part of, but it may have been the Beaverton Modular Railroad Club.
