HO Scale Passenger Car Prototypes

 

This page lists the prototypes for HO-Scale passenger cars. I created this list because most guides like this will tell what models are correct for a particular railroad, and they leave out cars like the Athearn and Con-Cor 72-footers, because they are too short. I wanted to create a list from the opposite perspective, that gives the road names that are correct for a particular model, and I wanted to include the 72-foot cars because some of them are relatively nice despite their shorter length and could be useful to model railroaders with small layouts with sharp curves. I have only included ready-to-run cars and easy-to-build decorated kits. More difficult kits and models that aren't available decorated, including brass models, are not included, because these models usually already identify their correct prototypes. I have also included only steel heavyweight and streamlined cars. I used a large number of resources to compile this list, including the websites of the manufacturers listed, plus manufacturers of brass cars and car sides to find similar cars, pages of photos and rosters of prototype cars. Some of my major sources of information include The Pullman Project, PullmanCar.org, Prototypes for N Scale Passenger Cars by Fred Klein (as many of them are also made in HO), Prototype Review: Walthers Budd Passenger Cars from Railroad.net and Santa Fe Railway Historical & Modeling Society HO Scale Model Reviews. Other sources of information included the book The Union Pacific Streamliners by Harold E. Ranks and William W. Kratville and Union Pacific Modeler Volume Three by Metcalfe Publications.

72' Heavyweights

Not all of the Athearn 72-foot heavyweight cars are necessarily too short. There were heavyweight RPO and Baggage cars that were only about 72 feet long, so these cars may be correct, though I don't know their prototypes. There were also some short heavyweight coaches, though the Athearn coaches have an unusual window pattern. The Diner, Sleeper and Observation ARE too short, though I don't know their exact prototypes either.

Daylight Cars

The Daylight cars have been announced as part of both the Broadway Limited Imports (BLI) and Precision Craft Models (PCM) lines. The PCM cars are pre-war Morning Daylight cars and the BLI cars are post-war Coast Daylight cars. They represent the same prototypes, but with slightly different details to represent different eras.

72' Smoothside Streamliners

Most of the Con-Cor 72-foot streamlined cars are based on Chicago & North Western or Union Pacific prototypes and are too short. However; the Baggage Car is very similar to a Canadian baggage car and would be the correct length for that prototype. There were some 72-foot baggage cars on U.S. railroads as well. There were some 72-foot RPO cars as well, though I don't know of any that are an exact match for the Con-Cor car.

The Model Power Harriman coach is about the right length for such cars used by Union Pacific and Southern Pacific, among others. I don't know if there is a prototype for the observation. The 72-foot streamlined cars are all too short.

The AHM/Rivarossi 1930's smoothside streamlined cars are all based on either Pennsylvania or Union Pacific prototypes, except for the coach. The Baggage Car is only 72 feet in length, which is correct for its Union Pacific prototype. Union Pacific also had similar baggage cars that were full length and rode on 6-wheel trucks.

The Roundhouse/MDC 60-foot Harriman RPO and Baggage are the correct length for their prototypes. The Combine and Coach appear to be shortened by only a few feet, presumably so they could use the same roof as the RPO & Baggage.
