Railroad Resources

Train Pictures

Pictures of  trains I have taken over the years.  Pictures date from 1992 to the present.  Categories include: 4449 & Friends, BNSF, Union Pacific, California Short Lines, Northwest Short Lines, Northwest Museums & Mass Transit.

NW Railroad Articles

Sometimes newspapers do interesting stories about railroads, but too often these articles are forgotten.  These articles often have a unique perspective, focusing on the people as well as the trains.  This section is an archive of articles I've saved.

Model Train Shows

Photographs from various model train shows.

Model Railroad Tours

Various model railroads I have visited.

Diesels of the Oregon Pacific Railroad

See the history of the Oregon Pacific Railroad's eclectic collection of diesel locomotives, past and present.

Steam on the Chelatchie Prairie

Crossett Western 2-8-2T on the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad

The Chelatchie Prairie Railroad, operating out of Yacolt, Washington, now has an operating steam locomotive! On May 27, 2007, I went to Yacolt to see and ride behind it.  This page includes a video of the train.

4449 - 844 Doubleheader!

Deadheading for the Puget Sound Steam Special

On April 12, 2007, Union Pacific #844 and Southern Pacific #4449 doubleheaded from Portland to Seattle as a deadhead move for the Puget Sound Steam Special. I chased the train from Portland to Centralia. This page also features a brief visit to the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad Association shops in Chehalis, Union Pacific #844 on display in Portland on May 22, and a few other surprises!

Farewell is not Forever

50th Anniversary of the Farewell to Steam Excursion

On May 20, 1956, the Spokane, Portland & Seattle steam locomotive #700 pulled a special train to mark the final run of all SP&S steam locomotives. It was called the Farewell to Steam Excursion. But, it wasn't really the end for #700. On June 10-11, 2006, #700 ran along the Springwater Corridor in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Farewell to Steam Excursion.

Lewis & Clark Explorer

During the summers of 2003- 2005, the State of Oregon & the Portland & Western Railroad ran an excursion train along the Lower Columbia River from Portland to Astoria. Follow it on its journey, and learn about the communities along the line.

Weyerhaeuser Woods Railroad

On April 16, 2005, I rode the Longview operation of the Weyerhaeuser Woods Railroad, one of the last logging railroads in America.  Come along for the ride and take the tour.

The Logan & San Miguel is a fictional railroad in central Oregon.  A portion of this railroad is modeled in the basement of my parents' house, specifically, the portion including the railroad's namesake towns, as it would have been in September 1969.  This page considers the L&SM to be an actual railroad, even though it is not.  Learn more than you wanted to know about a railroad that isn't real, & see pictures.

Amtrak: Self-Sufficient by 2003?

"'There’s something about a train that’s magic.'  If you have ridden a passenger train recently, you might recognize those words as a slogan for Amtrak, our national passenger railroad.  Soon, however, that magic may disappear.  Congress has declared that if Amtrak is not making enough revenue to support itself by 2003, it will be privatized or liquidated.  With less than 2 years before the deadline, Amtrak is still in the red. Can its 'magic' save it, or will the government make Amtrak’s final last call?"

Railroad Mergers in the 20th Century

"Freight railroads in the United States have been proposing mergers since the beginning of this century.  While many of the mergers of the past were intended to ensure the survival of the railroads, the mergers of today make successful railroads even more successful."
